Genius First Day of College Tips|16 First Day Of College Tips For The Best Freshman Year

It’s your first day of college!

You’re probably super nervous, but I promise you it’ll be okay. These tips helped me out, and they’ll help you out, too!

Here’s 16 first day of college tips for the best freshman year.

FIRST DAY OF COLLEGE TIPS

1. LEAVE YOUR DORM DOOR OPEN

This is the easiest way to make friends, I promise! Be super friendly, and try to get to know your hallmates.

Even if you don’t think you’ll be besties with your hallmates, it’s good to have some familiar faces around campus.

2. EXPLORE YOUR CAMPUS

On our first day my roommate and I explored all of campus and had so much fun. We were lost for quite awhile, but for the rest of the year we laughed about it because we had no idea how we were able to get so lost.

3. PACK SNACKS

Always always pack snacks in your backpack! They help you make friends, and you’ll probably get hungry…. like all the time.

Here’s my favorite snack to keep in my backpack – totally worth the try!

4. BRING A WATER BOTTLE

This is a must – you’ll realize how much you need it when you’re in class, and rushing down the hallway to your next class.

This is my favorite water bottle, and it’s so worth the investment!

5. PACK A LAPTOP SLEEVE

These are a life saver, and you’ll have peace of mind that your laptop is safe in your backpack.

Here’s a really cheap one that also has good reviews – amazon basics never disappoints!

6. WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES

I cannot stress this enough. In my college, the path from the dorms to the rest of the school included going down 2 flights of stairs, and I will never forget the poor girl slowly taking one step at a time in huge heels with people angrily passing her.

She looked flawless, but unless you can walk in heels like no one else, wear shoes you can get around quickly in – trust me!

7. GET TO CLASS SUPER EARLY

Seriously like 20 minutes if you can. You’ll get a good seat, and everyone has the weird habit of looking at everyone when they walk in the door on the first day? (Try not to do this) Also, getting there early avoids this.

8. DON’T FORGET YOUR LAPTOP!

This one is huge. Make sure you bring your laptop everywhere with you when you’re in college! Everyone else will, and you’ll love having it with you.

As an extra tip, try to take your notes on your laptop. Saving the planet!

This is my favorite laptop – completely worth the investment.

9. WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN

Even though it’s the first day, take diligent notes! Also, you should research some note-taking skills before college starts. Go into class with a plan!

10. MAKE SOME FRIENDS

It may feel awkward, but I’ve made my best friends in my classes. Usually your soon-to-be friends have the same major as yourself and are great future study buddies.

Just remember, everyone is just as nervous as you are! Making friends is easier than you think, and the first day is the perfect time to do it.

11. EXPECT SOME HOMEWORK

I know, I know. It’s the first day of college. However, I can almost guarantee you’ll get some homework. Finish it as soon as possible – get ahead while you can!

12. FIND YOUR “SPOT”

Finding a study spot can sometimes be hard, but search for one and try to claim it as your own.

I ended up having a couple, and when some were busy I would always find one that was open. It was great for productivity!

13. DON’T BE AFRAID TO DO STUFF ON YOUR OWN

As much as making friends is stressed on the first day, do some stuff on your own! Go to the coffee shop, grab lunch, do your homework. Do something alone to help being independent on the first day.

14. START USING GOOGLE CALENDAR

Trust me with this one. Start micro-scheduling yourself now – it’ll save you when you’re super busy!

15. EAT HEALTHY

It might seem fun to run to Taco Bell or McDonalds for lunch, but start healthy eating habits now!

Body positivity is so important, and leading a healthy diet (with some room for junk, of course) is a great habit to start in college.

16. SIGN UP FOR SOMETHING

Clubs on campus will be tabling all the first week to help recruit new members. Sign up and attend something! Even if you go and you hate it, you tried something new and you’ll try something else. This is key to having a great year!
