It’s the New Year! Or, it’s not, and you’re planning ahead.

Either way, I’m sure you have some stuff you want to dump off your plate, and replace with new, healthier stuff to get into better habits.

The new year is the perfect time for this to happen! It can be a tiny change, like taking the staircase, or a big change, like working out 3 days a week.

With whatever New Years Resolution you choose, make sure it’s one that worthwhile! You can always fit a quick routine into your schedule, especially when you swap out any unhealthy habits.

Here’s 25 fantastic New Year’s Resolutions for the best year yet!

NEW YEARS RESOLUTION IDEAS

1. TRY OUT A GYM

I know, I know – this one is super stereotypical. BUT, there is no better time than the present to start a new fitness routine!

2. “TAKE THE STAIRS”

This one is for those baby steps before getting a gym membership, or for just living a slightly more active lifestyle in general. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk 20 minutes to the store rather than drive. Make simple changes every day that can have a big long term impact on your health.

3. EAT MORE VEGGIES

Vegetables are an essential to everyone’s diet. Odds are, you aren’t getting enough of them! When you look at your dinner plate, make sure it’s full and colorful of tons of different kinds of vegetables. This adds variety to your palette, and helps keep the vegetables interesting.

4. PICK UP A NEW HOBBY

A new hobby is a great way to bring some new interests into this upcoming year. Pinterest is chock full of hobby ideas, and there’s a hobby out there for everyone.

5. QUIT EATING OUT

This is a fantastic money saving tip. Eating out costs a TON of money! In the New Year, make it a habit to eat really good meals at home. You’ll still be able to look forward to your meals, and you’ll be spending a fraction of the cost!

6. WORK ON YOUR SAVINGS

A New Year is the perfect time to work on your savings, or start building up a savings. Take a look at 2019 and see what you spent the majority of your money on. Cut back on these costs! A lot of people live well above their means, which will never work out in the end. Live well below your means, and start watching your savings grow.

7. READ MORE BOOKS

Reading books is a great way to give your eyes a break from so much screen time, and reading is a great way to keep your mind engaged. Pick books that you know you’ll be interested in, and you’ll have no problem burning right through them.

8. LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE

Learning a language is a fantastic way to spend free time, even if your goal is not to be come fluent. Duolingo is free, and there’s usually a multitude of classes in the community that you can take to introduce yourself to a new language!

9. NO PROCRASTINATING

Procrastinating is something we’re all guilty of, especially college students! Making a commitment to yourself to stop procrastinating going into the new year is a perfect step to take to keep yourself more on track.

10. GET MORE SLEEP

Sleep is SO much more important than we realize! Get into bed earlier, and get up earlier – all while getting at least 8 hours of sleep. You’ll find your productivity increase, your mood will be better, and you’ll be more alert – alongside tons of other benefits.

11. TRAVEL

Contrary to popular belief, traveling does not need to cost a ton of money. Traveling can be very affordable – you just need to think outside the box, and research the potential costs of where you’ll be traveling to.

12. TAKE SELF DEFENSE CLASSES

It’s always a good idea to be able to defend yourself, with hopes that you’ll never be faced with a situation where you need to. Taking self defense classes is a great way to get a good workout, and it can give you potentially life saving skills. I highly recommend taking at least one class!

13. DEEP CLEAN YOUR LIVING SPACE

We’re talking a true deep clean. Sweep and mop any hard floors, and shampoo and carpet. De-clutter completely, and donate any stuff that you have that you don’t use. You can choose to do this in just one room, or your entire living space! I really recommend starting out the year with less clutter, and a fresh, clean space to take on the year with you.

14. BE ON TIME

Running late is a bad habit, and it’s one that’s hard to break. Make a commitment to yourself to not only be on time, but be early! When you start showing up to everything early, you’ll soon be in the habit of being on time and you’ll be early for the things that are the most important to be on time for. Talk about replacing bad habits with good habits!

15. ADOPT A PET

Adopting a new, lifelong companion can be exactly what you need when you’re going into not only a new year, but a new decade! Head over to your local humane society or animal shelter, and adopt a new furry friend.

A few notes on adopting –

  • Make sure you can commit to this animal for their entire life – emotionally, physically and financially
  • Consider adopting an older pet! Pets that are older spend a lot more time at the shelter, yet they usually come trained and require a lot less work than a kitten or puppy.
  • Adopt, don’t shop!

16. SOCIAL MEDIA DETOX

Social media can be detrimental to mental health, especially if you’re consuming a lot of unhealthy and unrealistic content. A social media detox is the perfect way to reconnect with the world around you, cut down on screen time, and improve mental health.

17. JOIN A NEW CLUB

This tip is especially relevant for college students! Attending a new club is a great way to try something new, get more involved in something you’re passionate about, and meet new people. If you’re not in college, there’s tons of groups that get together in communities. Check public bulletin boards and sift around on facebook events – you’ll find something in no time!

18. COOK FOR YOURSELF MORE

Not only does this save you money, but it allows you to de-stress after a day at work or school. Cooking doesn’t need to be hard – there’s tons of easy recipes, and your skills will improve with time. Start with a recipe that you know you are able to achieve!

19. VOLUNTEER

Volunteering is really sold as doing stuff for other people, but really, you’re doing a lot for yourself. The turn of the year is a great time to go through all of your belongings and sort out what you don’t use. When you look at individual items, it can be hard to donate them. Instead, look at areas of your living space that you rarely touch. Odds are, these items can all be donated!

There’s no better time than the present to learn a new skill. Attend a one time class, or fully invest yourself in learning something that takes time, like a language! Whatever it is, it will be sure to enrich your life and start your year off on the right foot.

It’s no mystery that our climate is in some serious trouble, and there’s a lot that we all can be doing to reduce our carbon footprint. Making small changes to your daily routine can have some big impacts in the long run. Take the bus, stop eating red meat, eat less meat in general, wash your clothes on cold, or even just lower the temperature of your house a bit. Research ways to reduce your carbon footprint, and feel good knowing that you are making a difference!

23. STRESS LESS

Stress can take over our lives faster than we ever expect. Find ways to destress, and make sure that you implement them every day. Always take care of yourself, especially around your mental and physical health. Stress levels affect both of these things!
