FRESHMAN COLLEGE DORM ROOMS
1. GALLERY WALL
I love the creativity that can go behind gallery walls in dorm rooms. One thing I didn’t do with my gallery wall was add hanging plants. Plants add a lot of dimension to a dorm room, especially one that’s lacking in greenery from plants outside the window. Bring the greenery with you, and hang it on the wall!
If you choose to put your gallery wall above your bed, it’s a great idea to keep the theme going throughout your bedding. My favorite way to do this is with throw pillows.
2. TIERED ROLLING CART
A three tier rolling cart is an absolute essential for every college dorm room. If you’re going to buy one thing that’s a little more expensive, let it be this!
I kept it next to my bed as a makeshift nightstand and organized any odds and ends into it.
3. LIGHTS ON LIGHTS
Add lights wherever you can in your dorm. They’re perfect for when you just can’t handle the harsh overhead lights, and they’re great options for super cute decor.
If you are planning to have a gallery wall in your dorm, I highly recommend adding fairy lights all around it. I did this to my gallery wall, and it added the perfect finishing touch.

5. LOFTED AND ORGANIZED
Fill as much space as possible with organization units in your dorm. The first thing you’ll run out of is drawers that come with the dorm room!
6. COFFEE BAR
A coffee bar is such a great idea for a dorm room!
We kept our keurig in our dorm room above our microwave, and I definitely wish we would have made a coffee bar instead.
It’s really easy to add some plastic shelving with your keurig underneath, and organize coffee and cups on top.
7. FLOATING SHELVES AND PLANTS
I love the addition of the floating shelves above this desk!
Plants are a wonderful addition to a dorm room. Make sure you check where your dorm room is located in a building, some dorm rooms get little natural light.
Salt lamps are so trendy and such a cute addition to your 2024 freshman college dorm!

8. FOOD STATION
I always had trouble figuring out where to put my dishes and settled for an empty desk drawer. I really wish I would have thought of a food station!
Food stations are easily made out of plastic shelving that’s easily assembled and dissembled. If your dorm room is big enough, this is definitely worth the use of space!
You can even have the top “shelf” of your food station as a coffee bar, and the bottom shelves as your food and dish storage.
9. GALLERY DESK WALL
The idea of a gallery wall full of posters, pictures, and canvas prints is so cute! I love gallery walls in college freshman dorm rooms, especially this one!
10. Yellow Accents
Yellow is one of my favorite colors, and is especially one of my favorite colors for a college dorm room.
Here are my favorite yellow decor items, perfect for a dorm room and a perfect college lifestyle!
11. DARK ACCENTS
Most college dorm rooms have super super white walls.
While you want to keep your dorm room bright and cozy, dark accents are perfect for adding a ton of dimension to an already super white dorm room.
Here’s my favorite dark accents for your freshman year college dorm room.
12. Neon Signs
Neon signs completely transform the ambiance of a room, which makes a huge difference in a compact dorm space. There are so many neon sign options to fit your personality or room aesthetic.
13. Seating Under the Bed
Again, dorm rooms are pretty small, so you’ll need to maximize your space. Most dorms allow the beds to be lofted, which gives extra space for comfy seating. I love how clean and refined this lofted bed seating looks!
14. Disco Ball Decor
Disco balls add so much energy and ambiance. I love this small yet bold addition of a hanging disco ball planter. When the light from the window hits the disco ball, it will transform your space, and the pop of greenery adds even more life and airiness.
15. Macrame Hangings
Macrame adds an organic, earthy vibe to your college dorm. You can add macrame hangings above your bed, window, or even as a curtain for your lofted bed.
16. Globe Lights
Everyone loves fairy lights, but don’t sleep on globe lights! I love the cozy and inviting feel that these lights bring to a small space.
17. Blue and Black
Baby blue is definitely coming back in style. Blue and black decor accents look both soft and bold in your dorm room.
18. Pastels
Danish pastel decor is super trendy right now and I totally understand why! A pastel color palette will create a soothing and light vibe in your dorm room. I think a wall collage is the cutest way to pull this theme together.
