Your first college apartment! This is an extremely exciting year, and you’re probably transitioning from your dorm room into a full blown apartment.

When I first moved onto my college campus, I noticed that everyone that was at the mailroom pickup for apartments was wheeling away huge bins of amazon products. I then realized that was super smart, and why would anyone order them in advance and haul them in their car? Just ship them to your apartment!

If you have roommates, coordinate with them as to what everyone’s buying, and organize from there.

If you have your own apartment, this list will cover a lot of the essentials. Just pick and choose!

Here’s 19 college apartment essentials – all from Amazon!

College Apartment Essentials

Kitchen

This is probably the biggest change from a dorm room to an apartment – you need a bunch of kitchen supplies! Here’s the basics.

1. Silverware

It’s time to upgrade the odds and ends silverware that you had in your dorm room. Plus, you need a silverware organizer for a silverware drawer.

Here’s two options, at two different price points.

2. Dishes

Another set that needs investing in. I recommend investing in these from the beginning, and not wasting time and money getting cheap dishes that need to be replaced the next year.

Here’s a great set!

3. Kitchen Cleaning

Dish soap, clorox wipes, dishwasher detergent, and other general kitchen cleaning supplies are frequently overlooked.

Here’s some great general kitchen cleaning supplies.

4. Kitchen Linens

A rug for in front of your sink, and multiple sizes of dishcloths are easy to overlook, too.

Getting a variety pack saves some money and gives you everything you need!

5. Cooking Utensils

To make sure you have one of everything, again, get a set! Seriously, people have the sole job of making sure there’s a good assortment when it comes to variety packs.

All you have to do is pick the quality of the set!

Here’s some of my favorites.

6. Pots and Pans

Pots and pans tend to get super messy when they’re stuffed into a cabinet or drawer. During my first year of college, I would find my friends apartments full of so many odds and ends pots and pans.

This never makes any sense, and you always end up with 5 of the same size pots and 1 frying pan. Coordinate, and everyone bring complete sets of different things.

Here’s some pots and pans sets, and organization tools to go with them!

7. Knife Set

This is another kitchen item that I noticed everyone having a weird amount of odds and ends of. Do yourself a favor and get a complete knife set, with scissors and a cutting board.

Here’s some great options.

Living Room

Similar to the kitchen, your living room includes a lot of stuff that doesn’t carry over from your dorm room.

Here’s a great roundup of living room essentials, and some tips for saving money and space for your first college apartment living room.

1. Fuzzy Carpet

Even if your college apartment is carpeted, a fuzzy carpet being added on top for your coffee table and couch is a necessity.

Here’s a couple options, that come in a lot of colors. I would recommend white or gray to match any future apartments!

2. Throw Pillows and Blankets

This might not seem necessary, but I think this is key to having a “homey” apartment.

Plus, this keeps a theme going throughout your entire apartment. In dorm rooms it’s common to pick a color scheme, but in an apartment, I recommend going with a more house like theme, such as “mid-century modern” or “farmhouse” and picking a color palette based off of your theme.

Here’s some great throw pillow and blanket options.

3. Sound Bar and Smart TV

If you don’t have a TV and are planning to invest in one, I would highly recommend making sure you get a smart TV. These automatically connect to WiFi, and have Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, etc. all programmed onto the TV.

Alongside this, a sound bar seriously changes the game for your TV sound. While the sound bar might not seem necessary, if you plan on having lots of friends over, a soundbar is super useful. The TV just doesn’t get loud enough, and the soundbar doubles as a great speaker, too.

Here’s the TV and soundbar I have, and they are phenomenal! I also included a less expensive option that is still a smart TV.

4. End Table With Organization

Here’s a great option that can be brought over from a dorm room to your first college apartment living room.

If you had a four cube or six cube organizer in your dorm room, get a second one, and you have two relatively inexpensive end tables with a ton of organization.

If you don’t have one, just get two of these highly rated ones below.

5. Lamps

Now that you have two end tables, get some lamps to go on them! The lighting in your first apartment probably isn’t that great, and the lamps add a lot.

Make sure to get two, for both of your tables!

Bathroom

A bathroom seems like it could need a lot of supplies, but don’t spend a ton of money here. Nothing in a bathroom can really be invested in, and you’ll most likely replace most of the items in your bathroom when you move.

Keeping that in mind, here’s the essentials.

1. Bathmat

These are pretty essential, just make sure you clean it frequently! It should be treated like a slightly more sturdy towel, since it’s doing the same thing – collecting water.

2. Toothbrush Holder

Another essential that needs to be cleaned frequently. Seriously, don’t skimp on cleaning things in your bathroom!

Here’s a couple different styles.

3. Cleaning Supplies

Some of these supplies can cross over from your kitchen, but this is something that you don’t have to be afraid to stock up on.

Here’s the basics –

4. Plunger and Scrubber

You don’t think you really need a plunger… until you do. Don’t procrastinate on this one!

5. Shower Organization

I also notice so many college apartments that just contain 100 different bottles of products stacked on the floor next to the tub, or on the rim of the tub, and it just doesn’t work out.

6. Trash Can

Please put this next to the toilet, I cannot count how many times I just have to open people’s cabinets and try to find the trash. Remember to empty this one frequently! A lid and scented bags help keep the bathroom smelling fresh.

7. Bathroom Linens

Save everyone some time and just get linens to keep in the bathroom. This way you have towels and washcloths for guests, and there isn’t a weird array of towels from all the roommates in the bathroom.
