It’s the beginning of the school year, and you have the perfect excuse to get a ton of new school supplies.
Take it from someone who’s obsessed with organization, and has been to college for the last three years. I have tried probably all the different types of school supplies, and I know what works and what doesn’t. In the last two years, I’ve found such holy grail products I just need to repurchase when I run out.
You’ll notice the same couple products floating around with all upperclassman and people you always see in the same study spots. This is for a reason! Trending supplies are trending because so many people are satisfied with the product.
Here’s 13 trending school supplies that you need for college.
MUST HAVE SCHOOL SUPPLIES
1. MUJI PENS
Ever since I got these pins, it physically bothers me to use other ones. These pens are my ride or die study tools!
The pen tip is .38mm, which makes a really fine line and some super precise letters. My notes and planner just look so pretty after using them.
I get mine off Amazon. They’re imported from Japan, and I haven’t seen them in any other stores. Buy a bulk pack, they’re worth the money!
2. MIDLINER HIGHLIGHTERS
These highlighters are also from Japan, and I order them off amazon. Just like the pens shown above, they are fantastic!
I love how many colors they come in, too. Here’s a few different color options.
3. ERIN CONDREN PLANNER
If you’ve been to my recommendations page, you’ll know that I am obsessed with my Erin Condren planner. In fact, I just ordered a new one for this school year, and I am so excited to get it in the mail!
I use a combination of my erin condren paper planner, and my google calendar to schedule out all of my time and activities. This method works flawlessly for me, and I recommend trying it out.

4. SHARPIE CLEAR VIEW HIGHLIGHTERS
I actually came across these highlighters on accident, since they were the last ones at my target after all the school supplies were cleared out for back to school. I really needed some basic highlighters for studying, and these were all that was left.
To my surprise, I love them! I use my midliner highlighters to organize my planner and other organizing tools, and I use these sharpie highlighters to color code my notes on required reading for classes.
5. POST-IT NOTES
Post-it notes are an absolute essential. I use them to organize my planner more thoroughly, mark important topics in textbooks, and leave myself reminders.
I prefer the post-it notes with lines across them, since I usually create mini lists on them. However, I do keep both around! Here’s my favorites –

6. PENCIL POUCH
Pencil pouches are so cute, and I really love how big of a variety is available!
Here’s my current favorite. It fits quite a bit of stuff, and I love that it has extra pockets.
7. BIC MECHANICAL PENCILS
I love fine points when I’m writing notes, and usually I use my ride or die muji pens. When I’m working on something I might have to erase, I use these mechanical pencils!
They are .5mm, so I still get a nice fine line, but they’re still really sturdy. Plus, they’re really affordable.
8. SHARPIE
You might not think so, but keeping a black sharpie on you is always a great idea. I love labeling stuff, and a black sharpie is essential for that.
I recommend these clicky ones, I like them more than the capped ones!
9. AIRPODS
Airpods are a ride or die school tool. Long study session? Airpods. Public transportation? Airpods. Walking to class? Again, airpods.
I definitely didn’t believe the hype of these, and bought them with the intention of returning them. I was so wrong! I was hooked after day one and I’ve have them ever since. I love them!
I actually ordered them right off Amazon since I have Amazon Prime. If you’re a student, you can get 6 months of prime free – click this link!
10. FIVE STAR THREE SUBJECT NOTEBOOK
I LOVE my three subject notebooks. I take 5 classes, and I’m president of a club, so I keep two of these and have one section for each thing that’s going on.
I keep my syllabus and important papers in the built in folders, and it helps me stay super organized!

11. SCISSORS
Keep scissors in your backpack! They’re super cheap, and you’ll be really thankful you have them. Trust me!
I use these ones, an I bought a few to keep around my apartment, too. My roommates love them!
12. THREE HOLE PUNCH
I use a three hole punch so much! I was wary of making the $7 investment, but I use it so so much. I love organizing things like syllabi, class handouts, and relevant articles into a 1/2 inch binder dedicated to that class. A three hole punch is essential for this!
13. 1/2 INCH BINDERS
Some people carry around HUGE four inch binders to organize all of their classes in. Don’t do this! I have different classes on Monday and Wednesday than I do on Tuesday and Thursday. I bring my 1/2 inch binders for the appropriate classes those days!
Here are the ones I use, they usually last me around a semester. I’m a little more rough with throwing my school supplies in my backpack, if you’re careful I bet these would last you two semesters.
